This Alderley Queenslander renovation aimed to improve the street appeal and the liveability of the home through a contemporary addition that complemented the traditional Queenslander styling.
The current Alderley Queenslander renovation house has limited street appeal, it is slightly below road level, and the side verandah and gables added in the late 1940s are not well balanced. The current home does not have any real significant impact on the street and does not take full advantage of the wide frontage that it enjoys. All post-1946 additions would be removed and reorganised, and a new contemporary front with a hint of Queensland character would be created. There will be a new verandah at the front of the home, and an entry bridge from the street to access the front entry. A new driveway and a new front fence with a gatehouse will keep the family pet inside the property and provide streetscape improvements.
A new garage and storage area under the existing house will provide cover for the family cars, while a secondary driveway with carport will accommodate our client’s sailing boats on the western side. All of the existing landscaping is to be redefined with a new thick screen of landscaping on the north-east corner, privatising the new pool.
Behind the existing house, we will build a new living and bedroom wing. The new addition will be a pavilion style, and sympathetic to the Queenslander home. Materials on the existing house will blend with the chosen materials on the new wing. Sunshades and sunscreens will be used to define the lines of the home, while some landscaping around the edges will soften the fence line.
We recommend a low-maintenance sub-tropical garden to soften the home. Sub-tropical soft foliage plants will provide a nice contrast to the hard surfaces in the Alderley Queenslander renovation design.
This space will become the main bedroom suite and possibly the study. The new main bedroom will receive a north-east aspect of good light and breeze and views over the street and the new pool. The new main bedroom will occupy the front of the Queenslander, with an ensuite and wardrobe located on the western side. This space will have classic art deco styling with feature bulkheads, battening to the ceiling and possible feature lighting.
A new study at the rear of the Queenslander will finish this area of the renovations. The existing roof is to remain as is. The new verandah at the front of the home will be architecturally linked via its roof form to the new deck space attached to the rear wing of the home.
The ground floor of the existing Queenslander will be renovated to include a double garage storage and workshop space. A laundry will also be included in this area with access to a separate drying court and plenty of utility space.
A new entry bridge structure will extend from street level from the gatehouse through to a stair that will ascend to the first floor. The Alderley Queenslander renovation bridge and the stair will be screened off from the garden and the neighbour to ensure privacy.
A roof structure over the entry stair will have similar styling to the new contemporary roof structure over the front verandah. The front door and entrance will be on the top level where the main living and dining areas are located.
An internal stair will provide access from the garage to the upper level, where a bridge with glimpses into the garden will link the two entrances to the new south wing.
The interior of the Alderley Queenslander renovation home is to have a homely feel with built-in bookcases spots for feature pictures and niches for sculptural pieces. Elegant art deco styling with a contemporary mix will feature throughout. Feature bulkheads in the ceiling will provide interest and lighting solutions. Some feature built entertainment units, and a gas fireplace will add homely touches.
We will create a cook’s kitchen, which will overlook the new deck. Shutters with insect screens in a bi-fold format around the perimeter of the deck will add sun control and general usability of the deck all year round. Behind the new kitchen is the winter dining space with views to the south and south-west via a corner window. The dining room will allow for eight to be seated at one time.
The living area maximises views to the south west, however, is removed from the circulation routes in the home. A picture slot style window captures and frames the views, while shutters or Venetian screening will block out the harsh western sun and heat when needed.
A small WC is located across the link bridge, next to the study for guest usage.
Three bedrooms will be on the ground floor of the new living wing, with a bathroom and separate toilet located within easy reach. The entertainment room will have views and access to the pool, allowing easy supervision and entertaining.
