Mt Nebo New Home Design

About the project

Project summary

This Mt Nebo new home design is essentially a concrete structure with large concrete columns with buttress-like shapes. These buttresses, along with the tower and large concrete wall at the entry, give the home a castle-like resemblance. Set high on the hill the house looks over the property as if it is a castle looking over its territory.

The external materials of the home are book-leaf stone to the front face of the house, off-form concrete in its natural state, aluminium and timber-framed windows with expansive glazing and a mixture of gravel-covered concrete roofs and copper sheet roofs (which will age gracefully like Customs House in Brisbane City).

About the location

Mt Nebo

This Mt Nebo New Home Design is a prestige contemporary acreage home designed by Dion Seminara architecture. From the entry, the house has a fortress wall. To the north and east, the house has glass walls, predominantly. External Venetians protect from the harsh sunlight in the morning, and large eaves overhangs ensure the home remains cool most of the day. Beyond the fortress wall, you will ascend the entry steps through a bamboo forest; the first view of the tranquil gardens surrounding the home.

While climbing the entry stairs, you also look across the reflection pools to a Japanese-style sand garden. This straightforward and structured garden provides order and discipline to the front of the home.

Entry/Waiting Area

Beyond the entry bridge, through a large set of solid timber doors, is the entrance to an area with standard ceiling height. This ceiling height gives this space an intimate feeling and emphasises the grandeur of the higher ceilings beyond this space. To one side of the entry, a simple bench seat provides visitors with an area to wait and reflect.

After ascending another few steps, you arrive at a grand space – the reflection look-out. This space has large full-height glass windows where you can gaze out across reflection ponds into a refined garden that forms a room within the private boundaries of the walled fortress home. This garden will also provide a tranquil view from the southern side of the main living area of the house.

Circulation

The magnificent staircase provides vertical movement within the home, with the stair itself providing a link to the bedroom levels and basement level.

Inner Sanctuary/Formal living

After entering the home, you arrive within the inner sanctuary. This space contains a miniature garden. Off the inner sanctuary is the formal living room with a grand fireplace. The room itself has full-height glass walls on three sides which look over stunning reflection pools. Privacy is provided via Venetian screening devices. Apart from the fireplace, which provides warmth, the room has cold finishes to emphasise the remoteness of the home’s location.

Link/Formal Dining Room

A full-glass walled entry bridge, or link, connects the dramatic dining room to the house. The dining room is suspended some six metres above the ground. It has glass walls on four sides, which extend from floor to ceiling. When in this room the occupants feel like they are floating within the air space, particularly during the evening when the surrounding countryside is in complete darkness.

Kitchen/Meals/Informal Living

A large gourmet kitchen suits our client’s personal needs as well as those of a professional chef, if and when required. The kitchen includes a built-in dining bench and different zones for preparation, cooking, and cleaning.

The casual living zone incorporates large sliding doors which can be screened as well as a large entertainment unit. A built-in corner seat maximises seating and minimises clutter.

Deck/Bar/BBQ/Winter Deck

The deck is large, but not excessive. The main deck is suitable for a large table with the winter deck incorporating built-in seating.

The Bar/BBQ area is located in this position so it can service both decks, the spa area, the pool below and the indoor casual living area.

Office/Library/Bedroom One

The library overviews the formal living room and has a lookout deck for the expansive views. The office is large, but not excessive, and incorporates built-in detailed joinery to maximise functionality and minimise clutter.

The first bedroom has a large ensuite with a unique spa that is surrounded by river gravel, a double shower, and a separate toilet. A sauna is close in proximity, as well as the large dressing/walk in robe. The bedroom itself includes a large four poster bed and retreat area.

Guest bedrooms/Laundry/Guest Retreat

The guest bedrooms service visitors with five-star hotel-style accommodation, while the guest retreat is casual for longer staying guests. The laundry and drying area is for the whole house.

Bedroom Two and Three

These rooms incorporate ensuites, walk-in robes, desk areas, and balconies. These rooms are orientated to the east to take advantage of the available views.

Garage

A five-car garage is on the basement level and is connected to the main stair. Due to the number of cars in the garage, we included a turntable in the garage floor to provide easy manoeuvrability.

Driveway/Garage Access

A circular driveway is at the main entry gate, while a secondary driveway provides private access to the home through a large set of steel gates to the garage.

Home Theatre

This area is located underground on the basement level of the house. The seating within this area is made up of lounge-style seating.

Pool/Spa

The large pool with an infinity edge or wet edge includes a wading area and a large sun-baking or stepping stone platform within the pool. Also, a large outdoor spa in a sheltered environment provides a relaxing zone during summer. A large glass window provides a view from the spa directly into the side of the pool.
