Indooroopilly Queenlander Home Renovation

This project involved reimagining an existing Queenslander timber home in Indooroopilly, transforming a traditional layout into a more connected and functional family residence. The original upper level followed a more traditional arrangement, with three bedrooms, one bathroom, separate kitchen, dining, lounge, sunroom and a modest deck.

The design builds on this existing character while carefully reworking the home to better support contemporary living. The proposed design introduces a stronger connection between the kitchen, dining, lounge and outdoor areas, with a new deck creating a more generous outdoor living zone connected to the pool and garden.

The bedroom and bathroom arrangement was also improved, with new robe storage, an updated bathroom layout, an ensuite and a walk-in robe providing greater privacy and comfort. The undercroft and lower ground level were retained as part of the home’s functional base, while new concrete, stairs, screening and access upgrades give the lower level a more resolved and intentional feel.

Visually, the design retains the familiar Queenslander character of the home while giving it a cleaner and more contemporary expression. The renders show light weatherboard-style cladding, black balustrading and screening, improved landscaping, a refreshed street presence and a more finished undercroft treatment.

The result is a more practical, comfortable and connected home that respects the existing highset timber structure while improving flow, privacy, outdoor living and everyday usability.

The design brief centred on improving the way the existing Indooroopilly home functions for everyday family life, while maintaining the charm and character of the original highset timber residence.

The existing layout had good bones, but the relationship between the internal living spaces and the outdoor areas was limited. The kitchen, dining, lounge and deck were not working as strongly together as they could, and the small existing deck did not take full advantage of the home’s connection to the pool, garden and surrounding landscape.

A key priority was therefore to create a more open and practical living arrangement, where the kitchen and main living areas could better connect to a larger outdoor deck. This new outdoor living zone was designed to support entertaining, family use and a more relaxed connection to the pool area.

The clients also needed the bedroom and bathroom areas to work more efficiently. The sketch design responds by improving storage, introducing new robe areas, updating the bathroom arrangement and adding an ensuite and walk-in robe to increase comfort, privacy and long-term functionality.

Another important part of the brief was to make better use of the home’s highset form. Rather than treating the undercroft as leftover space, the design introduces screening, improved access, stairs and a cleaner lower-level treatment so that the base of the home feels more integrated with the overall design.

Overall, the project aimed to enhance the home’s liveability without losing its established character, creating a more functional, contemporary and family-focused residence suited to its Indooroopilly setting.
