Herston Home Renovation

Project background

Herston Home Renovation

My clients for this Herston home renovation design project were a couple in their 50’s looking for long-term lifestyle solution. The purpose of the project was to design a pavilion on the premise of creating additional living space with a contemporary feel whilst remaining sensitive to the existing architectural form. The current home was an inner city character home in Herston, Brisbane. The garden area included a swimming pool and a fairly large (and unused) grassed area proximate to the pool.

Herston Home Renovation Pavilion Design

The location for the new pavilion was identified to be positioned in the rear garden at a distant proximity to existing house to provide increased privacy and a feel of secluded living quarters.  The main bedroom was planned to provide a larger area and include his and her walk in robes, private ensuite and a separate water closet.  The pavilion design also featured a private parental retreat with direct access to existing pool and garden areas.

Of importance to the design was that the addition was to be climatically responsive by incorporating active and passive solar design principles.  For instance, the louvres were positioned on the northeastern side of the pavilion to increase ventilation and capture natural light. Mechanically controlled Vental Venetians were planned to be solar receptive. The design also included wide eaves to provide an overhang and shade. In addition, a 1200mm wide sunshade was proposed so as to allow morning sun in winter yet prevents harsh sun during the summer months. Furthermore, service spaces such as ensuite, WIR and WC were placed on the southwestern side of addition to prevent solar gains.

All these principles were incorporated into a consistent design with a strong connection to the existing house. Flow through the house was improved by incorporating a new internal staircase which assists movement between levels more specifically to the garage and laundry areas.

Further Lifestyle Design Suggestions

In a bid to make the existing house more habitable and add a contemporary edge the following optional alterations were also suggested:-

  • A new modern kitchen fitout to improve the connection with dining and outdoor entertaining areas.
  • Deck areas to be extended; increasing the outdoor living space and a counter leaved barbeque recess be installed.
  • The dining areas should be expanded by cutting down the wall to kitchen adding a breakfast bar in conjunction with full-width bi-fold doors to deck.
  • Finally, the wall in front of the laundry on the ground floor should be shifted to increase area.  This alternation, however, was dependent on the accessibility of spare tiles to patch floor.

All the above optional alterations were suggested to reflect trends in the marketplace and maintain a competitive edge in demand over time.
