Chelmer Character Home Renovation

About the project

Project Summary

This project involved lifting a traditional character home and building underneath to increase living space without compromising its historic charm.

The new lower level accommodates additional bedrooms and a large outdoor deck, enhancing both the livability and flow of the home.

The renovation respects the existing streetscape while offering a modern lifestyle upgrade.

By retaining and restoring key character features, the design bridges heritage values with contemporary family living.

Architectural rendering of a modern two-storey home with a dark exterior and extensive greenery. The ground floor features an open-plan living area with glass sliding doors, a covered outdoor patio, and a built-in barbecue. The upper floor has lush planter boxes along the edge. The garden is landscaped with tropical plants and bordered by a black-framed mesh fence.

Client’s needs

The Design Brief

The clients approached us with a much-loved character home in Chelmer that no longer met the spatial needs of their growing family. They wanted to preserve the heritage of the house while adding more functional living areas, additional bedrooms, and an outdoor entertaining space. It was essential to maintain the charm and street appeal of the original home while introducing modern, light-filled areas that embraced the landscape.

Design Features

  1. House Lift & Underbuild: The existing home was elevated to allow for new ground-floor spaces without altering the heritage façade.

  2. Large Entertaining Deck: A generous deck was added to create a seamless connection between the indoor kitchen/dining areas and the backyard.

  3. Casement Windows: New timber casement windows were installed to bring natural light into the space and frame views of the surrounding garden.

  4. Additional Bedrooms: The underbuild accommodates new bedrooms to meet the needs of a growing family.

  5. Landscape Integration: Planting around the home and deck was designed to soften the transition between old and new, creating a private, tranquil environment.

  6. Character Preservation: The original architectural details were carefully maintained and complemented with sympathetic contemporary finishes.
