Why Planning Is Everything: Reflections From a Brisbane Architect Who’s Spent a Career Learning What Makes Homes Truly Work

Lifestyle, New Homes, Renovations, Tips and Advice

I’ve met many homeowners over the years who’ve poured their savings into building or renovating only to find that something doesn’t feel quite right. It’s not always easy to explain. The rooms might look beautiful. The finishes might be high-end. But the home doesn’t flow. The layout feels disjointed. Spaces sit empty. Daylight is missing where it’s needed most.

More often than not, the problem is planning — or a lack of it.

“We Plan Every Square Metre of Your Home”

I don’t think people truly understand what we do as architects. In the domestic space, people like me who’ve been in the profession for decades are more than just designers. We’re planners. From concept to completion, we think through every square metre of your home, considering how it connects, flows, and functions. Every detail is considered to ensure there’s harmony between the indoors and outdoors, and that nothing is left to chance. This level of planning is what prevents the issues so many people face after investing heavily in their property.” — Dion Seminara, Brisbane Architect.

We see planning as the quiet work that underpins everything else — the conversations, the site observations, the early sketches that test possibilities. It’s not glamorous, but it’s essential. Planning is how we uncover the logic behind a home’s layout. It’s what allows rooms to feel natural, flexible, and connected to the way people actually live.

When Planning Is Missing

We’ve worked with clients who came to us after living with frustrating design flaws. Kitchens placed far from outdoor dining areas, windows positioned with no regard for the sun’s path, or entire rooms that were rarely used. In many cases, the home wasn’t poorly built; it just wasn’t thoughtfully planned.

These aren’t just design issues. They impact how people live in their homes every day. They affect comfort, energy use, routines, and the simple enjoyment of daily life.

Good Planning Goes Unnoticed — Until It’s Not There

You know a home has been well planned when it doesn’t draw attention to itself. It just works. The light is where it needs to be. The breeze moves through naturally. You find yourself using every space, not because you have to, but because you want to.

That’s the result of careful, considered planning. It’s not something you can add in later; it must be there from the beginning.

Our Process: Designing From the Ground Up

At our practice, we take planning seriously. It’s embedded in every stage of our process, starting with conversations and observations long before formal design begins. We spend time on-site, listen closely and test ideas. And we do this because we know how much of a difference it makes in the long run.

We call this our SHAPE Design Method. Not because it’s a product, but because it reflects the way we shape each project from the ground up. With care, with context, and with the belief that planning is what brings everything else into alignment.

A Quiet Argument for Slowing Down

In a fast-moving world, planning asks us to slow down. To take stock of what matters, to think through the consequences of each choice, and to design homes that will serve their owners for years to come.

If you’re at the beginning of a project, it’s worth asking:
Have I given enough time to planning?
Have I looked beyond floor plans and asked how I really want to live?

The truth is, planning well doesn’t just create good homes; it helps build lives that are more connected, comfortable, and resilient.

A moment of stillness made possible by thoughtful planning. This inviting dining space is a reminder that when we slow down and plan with intention, we create homes that support connection, comfort, and everyday rituals.
