What Happens When You Restore, Not Replace, a Heritage Treasure: Lessons from a Bulimba Church Restoration
Community & Social ImpactFor 35 years, I’ve had the privilege of designing homes and spaces that enrich people’s lives. But every so often, a project arrives that reminds us why architecture matters at its deepest level. It can preserve memory, honour tradition, and breathe new life into community identity.
The restoration of Saints Peter & Paul Church in Bulimba was one such project, and it showed us exactly what happens when you choose restoration over replacement.

Lesson 1: Honouring the Past, Strengthens the Future
Ninety years ago, Saints Peter & Paul stood as the grandest building in Balmoral, a brick landmark where generations of families gathered for Sunday Mass, weddings, baptisms, and funerals. Its walls carried the weight of community memory.
Rather than strip this away, our renovation carefully retained the original brickwork and colour schemes, restored the historic artworks, and preserved the altar as a timeless backdrop to worship. By respecting heritage, we not only preserved the soul of the church but also gave it fresh vitality for the decades ahead.

The church’s red brick façade remains a landmark in Bulimba after careful restoration.

Lesson 2: Architecture Must Evolve with Worship
Fifty years ago, Catholic liturgy shifted from being viewed as a priest-led ceremony to a shared celebration of the entire congregation. Architecture needed to adapt.
By re-shaping the interior layout to better connect the assembly with the altar and ambo, the church became a space where the community could participate more fully in worship. Restoration gave us the chance to align form with this evolving understanding of spirituality.
Lesson 3: Materials Carry Meaning
Every material was chosen not only for its durability but also for its symbolism. Tessellated tiles, marble, and glass honoured the building’s public, sacred purpose.
The ambo and altar were carved from single cubes of marble, simple yet profound.

Every detail, from tessellated tiles to marble altar, reflects the church’s enduring heritage.

Lesson 4: Restoration Builds Community Spirit
Perhaps the greatest impact wasn’t architectural at all, but relational. All architectural services were carried out voluntarily, reflecting the community’s devotion and its desire to safeguard the church for generations.
It was an honour to undertake this project. Being entrusted with such a significant sacred space was both a privilege and a reminder: Restoration is not only about repairing buildings, but about nurturing the spirit of the people connected to them.
This shared spirit was recognised when the project received a Regional Commendation for Public Architecture by the Australian Institute of Architects in 2016.

Community spirit is alive within the restored church, where heritage connects with modern worship.

Looking Forward
The restoration of Saints Peter & Paul shows us the power of restoration: it keeps heritage alive, honours community memory, and adapts sacred spaces for modern life without erasing their soul.
At dion seminara architecture, we are proud to have played a role in preserving this treasure. Ultimately, the lesson is clear: when you restore instead of replace, you safeguard not just a building, but the spirit and stories it holds.
Architecture, at its best, serves both people and spirit, and restoration is one of the most powerful ways to achieve that.
Ready to Restore Instead of Replace?
If you’ve been considering a heritage or public building project, there’s no better time to begin than now. Every year of delay risks further wear, higher costs, and, most importantly, the fading of community connection.
