From Poolside to Alfresco: Architect Tips for Outdoor Living

New Homes, Renovations, Tips and Advice

Summer in Brisbane is made for outdoor living. Warm days and gentle breezes are the perfect excuse to gather friends and family. Whether it’s poolside cocktails, long Sunday lunches under the pergola, or quiet mornings in a shaded courtyard, the right design can make your outdoor space an extension of your home.

Thoughtful planning by an experienced architect can ensure your outdoor area is not only beautiful but also functional and climate-responsive. From compact courtyards to expansive alfresco areas with integrated pools, the right approach will enhance your Brisbane lifestyle all year round.

1. Designing for the Brisbane Climate

Our subtropical weather calls for smart design choices that balance sun, shade, and ventilation.

  • Shade solutions like pergolas, retractable awnings, and carefully placed trees keep spaces cool.
  • Climate-friendly materials — such as stone pavers and certain hardwoods — stay comfortable underfoot even on hot days.
  • Airflow strategies ensure breezes pass through, making alfresco dining enjoyable even in midsummer.

2. Creating Seamless Indoor–Outdoor Flow

A well-designed outdoor area feels like a natural continuation of your home.

  • Large bi-fold or sliding doors blur the boundaries between indoors and out.
  • Consistent flooring finishes enhance the sense of flow.
  • Positioning key spaces like the kitchen or living area to open directly onto the entertaining zone encourages daily use.

With expert design by registered architects, Brisbane homeowners gain indoor-outdoor transitions that feel effortless and integrated.

3. Pools as Centrepieces

A pool can be more than a place to cool off — it can be the focal point of your outdoor design.

  • Integrate the pool and landscaping so they feel like part of the architecture, not an afterthought.
  • Consider proportions and positioning for balance and privacy.
  • Use surrounding seating, greenery, and lighting to create a resort-like atmosphere.

4. Alfresco Dining Done Right

Outdoor cooking and dining areas are the heart of summer entertaining.

  • Include weather-resistant cabinetry and appliances.
  • Position prep areas and BBQs close to the main house for easy access.
  • Add lighting layers so the space works just as well for an evening gathering as a lunchtime feast.
  • Design spaces with adaptability in mind, such as operable walls, louvres, or sliding panels that allow you to close off or open up the area depending on the weather.

An experienced Brisbane architect can design alfresco kitchens that blend practicality with style.

5. Adding Comfort and Atmosphere

Small details can turn a functional space into a favourite retreat.

  • Built-in seating, fire pits, and soft landscaping create cosy gathering spots.
  • Task, ambient, and feature lighting enhance both usability and mood.
  • Water features and greenery help cool the space and create a calming backdrop.

Designing an outdoor area involves much more than picking furniture and plants.

  • A tailored design will suit your lifestyle, property, and Brisbane’s climate.
  • Professional planning ensures your outdoor spaces complement your home’s architecture and proportions.
  • Expert guidance helps you avoid costly mistakes, from poor drainage to awkward layouts that don’t suit how you live.

Hi, I’m Dion Seminara – a practicing architect and licensed general builder with 35 years of experience. I’m also a specialist in Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD), passionate about creating homes that are both functional, climate-responsive and future ready. I graduated with honours from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, in 1989, before registering as an architect in 1991 and as a licensed builder in 1992. I am proud to be a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA).

Over the course of my career, I’ve received 12 ArCHdes Residential Architecture Awards, the LJ Hooker Flood Free Home Design Award, and the 2016 AIA Regional Commendation for Public Architecture. My expertise spans renovations for all styles of houses with particular focus on Queenslanders and 50s/60s/80s homes and bespoke new homes, including luxury residences. This broad experience has positioned me as one of Brisbane’s leading architectural specialists in lifestyle-focused design – integrating architecture, interiors, and landscape to create truly liveable homes.
