Why Do Architects Suggest Passive House Design?
Lifestyle, Renovations, Tips and AdviceYou may have heard the term, but do you really understand what passive house design can do for your home?
Passive house design (‘Passivhaus’ in German) is a principle that revolves around reducing the need to artificially cool or heat your home.
Passive house design aims to lower the running cost of your home and keep the internal temperature consistent year-round.
Air-tight design is a key principle of passive house design. It stands to reason that the less undesirable gaps or draughts in your home, the less heat loss/gain your home will experience. That said, natural ventilation plays its part in this style of home design.

Norman Park Renovation
New and old homes alike can benefit from passive house design.
If you’re looking at building a new home and want to have one that requires very little artificial heating or cooling, then passive house design could well be the answer to your needs.
But older homes can also benefit from the principles of passive house design. Sure, it could be a significant renovation, however, the benefits it offers are enormous. An architect with experience in this type of design can do wonders with older homes, dramatically reducing your power consumption and lowering power bills, all while reducing your carbon footprint.

I graduated with honours from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, in 1989, before registering as an architect in 1991 and as a licensed builder in 1992. I am proud to be a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA).
