Character House Renovation – Bulimba: Case StudyRenovations
CASE STUDY: Character House Renovation – Bulimba.
THE PROJECT: Being a character home it was important that we seamlessly blend modern elements with the traditional Queensland character of the home. Fittings and materials were to be modern but it was essential that these did not clash with the existing structure.
The renovation itself took place in two stages over ten years, starting with the house being raised and moved in 2000.
Both stages were planned at the same time to make the second part of the renovation as stress-free as possible. The plan was to undertake stage two when the owner’s children were a bit older. This involved adding a cook’s kitchen whilst turning the existing kitchen into a luxury bathroom-ensuite in a magnificent 20 square metre extension. Some other areas that hadn’t been touched during the initial renovation were then transformed into a home office and very large robe area.
The result is simply magnificent
The stunning new kitchen is a beautifully functional space that receives ample natural light. The brushed silver of the appliances contrasts superbly with the stunning red accents and dark cabinetry.
Amazingly, even though the cabinet colours are intentionally dark giving the space a modern, yet timeless finish, the area itself is beautifully light and airy. Natural light from the large cavern above the kitchen perfectly lights the space by reflecting off the numerous white surfaces. At night cleverly concealed LED strip lighting mirrors this effect creating beautifully reflected light regardless of the time of day.
The bathroom also makes use of LED strip lights for a subtle glow with an overhead LED star effect. The bathroom space is segregated housing the wonderful egg-shaped bath. The space takes advantage of natural ventilation through the use of louvres as well as natural light, making this an incredibly eco-friendly renovation.
The exterior of the home keeps its traditional appeal whilst combining modern materials such as the rich timber features used in the open deck come fully enclosed outdoor room. External weatherboards blend perfectly with the corrugated iron features to create a wonderfully balanced façade.
This renovation truly marries the new with the old and creates a perfect link from the inside to the outside in a wonderfully balanced design that perfectly suits the owner’s lifestyles.
