Architects Shorncliffe  –  A Workers Cottage Renovation

A retired couple approached us to provide classic styling to their Shorncliffe works cottage. No strangers to renovating, the couple had renovated this home some twenty years prior.

The space available for outdoor entertainment required a clear purpose. As a solution, we proposed an indoor outdoor style of concept. The Sketch Design process led us to resolve the lack of connectivity through the use of larger doors and windows. Capturing the view and the breezes from this superb location was an essential design requirement. The pre-existing small deck was enhanced to cater for the family’s love of outdoor dining.

The Shorncliffe home’s western wall was to include new double hung windows to match those of the existing dining room. Furthermore, high-level highlights would provide additional winter light to enter the home. To the outside of these windows, sliding shutters with insect screening would ensure the enjoyment of this area year round.

Internally a range of very detailed cabinet work was proposed plus ceiling treatments. Custom book shelving and storage areas were to compliment the new fireplace. This fireplace was to be the focal point of the living room, incorporating a refined Victorian style fireplace with custom mantle. To define the renovated space, new bulkheads on the ceiling with concealed lighting would enlighten the home.

These changes, though small, made a dramatic difference to this home.
