Hawthorne Queenslander Home Renovation

Existing charm

Classic Queenslander Reborn

This Hawthorne workers cottage renovation was designed to enhance the existing charm of this 1910-character home and to provide relief from the busy road frontage of the property. Broadly speaking, this renovation created a beautiful home with five bedrooms, a study, two living areas, three bathrooms, a double garage, and a large entertainment deck.

First floor

Relocation and Extension

The first floor of the property was reorganised so that the kitchen could be relocated to the southern/rear end of the home. This also gave us the perfect opportunity to move the living areas to the back of the house. Recycling the floor plan in this way significantly improved the liveability of the home and allowed us to cultivate an immersive indoor/outdoor home experience between these living spaces and the existing rear deck. The strength of this connection was also reinforced with a new roofline over the deck.

At the rear of the property, a new pavilion-style extension was built which includes a new main bedroom, ensuite, and walk-in robe. Not only did this extension significantly increase the square footage of the home, but it also captured picturesque views of the lawn and neighbouring bushland.

Client requirements

The brief

It was important to our clients that we enhance the streetscape appeal of the property. They were also looking for relief from the busy road frontage of the property. A new fence was therefore installed with retaining walls towards the rear section of the home. Not only did installing this fence privatise the backyard, it also acted as an effective noise barrier from the busy street. The main entrance to the property was also relocated to the side street and landscaping was introduced to elevate the overall aesthetic of the home.

In the backyard, a separate fence was installed around the pool and solar heating was introduced. A deeper double garage was also designed to provide our client with a much-needed workshop space.

Internally, the renovated home boasts a new bathroom (with a separate bath) and a new kitchen. Stairs were also installed to lead guests to a new ground floor level where a fifth bedroom, bathroom, and separate laundry was constructed. We also included a new media room/ entertainment room under new pavilion-style extension.

Hawthorne History and Architecture

Hawthorne is about 4 kilometres east of the Brisbane City Centre. As Brisbane grew, Hawthorne’s 1860s farming district was gradually subdivided. Today Hawthorne has many grand old Queenslanders and workers cottages, lovingly restored, renovated and extended. There are also many new luxury homes.
