Annerley Home Extension

Small renovation & extension

Annerley Home Extension

This small renovation and extension project was to expand the indoor/outdoor living spaces for a 1910s workers cottage. As a result it created a connection between the living area and the backyard. The cosmetic changes in the kitchen gave a new lease of life to the old home’s charm. There were a few challenges with noise penetrating the home from a busy main road and a tight budget. That is to say the design needed to create a very liveable, and cost-effective space.

Cosmetic enhancements

Project details

The design expands the living areas at the rear of the home and integrates these spaces with the backyard through a new indoor/outdoor living room. We maximised the function of the original internal spaces and provided defined uses for each area. The design integrated the kitchen to ensure a flow through these main zones. A larger kitchen was created, and cosmetic enhancements were made to the existing cupboards. Therefore allowing our clients to save on their budget in this area. To block out the noise from Ipswich Road, we installed Noise insulation. The design of the extension accommodated covered access to the laundry.

Due to the client’s budget, The design provided the space required while limiting the degree of renovation due to the client’s budget. We also provided recommendations about their bathroom so this space could become more functional.

This design was a finalist in the 2006 HIA ‘Building Designer of the Year’ Award.
